Elution of the antibody coating human erythrocytes in a case of auto‐immune haemolytic disease showed a specificity for the antigen E which was not present on the patient erythrocytes. The patient's serum contained iso‐immune anti‐C and anti‐E specificities. Absorption‐elution experiments with multiple specificity anti‐Rh sera show similarly the absorption of anti‐C, ‐D or ‐E specificities unto C‐, D‐ and E‐negative cells. The phenomenon described in the case of auto‐immune haemolytic disease can thus be explained by a cross‐reacting specific autoimmune antibody.
